  • In the first of two contests in the Third Annual Battle For the Bone the Tuckerman Lady Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead over their south county counterparts only to see the Newport Lady Greyhounds score three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to escape with a 6-5 victory.
Tuckerman opened the scoring with Sadye Calhoun and Lyz Winemiller reaching on Newport errors to begin the bottom of the first inning.  Sara Shipman followed with an RBI double.  Following a strikeout, Allyson Barnes walked to load the bases before Newport starter Ashton Madden worked her way out of the frame allowing only one run.
The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of the porous Newport defense as Hannah Dilday reached on an error and worked her way around the bases for a 2-0 Tuckerman lead.
Shipman helped her own cause with a lead-off double in the bottom of the third inning and scored on a two-out RBI single by Katelyn McGonigal.
After sending only nine batters to the plate in the first three innings off Shipman, the Newport offense got untracked in the top of the fourth as Taelehs Williams led off with a walk.  Following a strikeout, Madden singled as did the suddenly scorching Xylina Marshall whose RBI single cut the lead to 3-1.  Sissy Boyster followed with an RBI double to drive home Madden.  Marshall would tie the game as she scored on a Lady Bulldog error.
For the second consecutive inning, Williams got the Newport offense going with a lead-off walk.  Marshall gave Newport their first lead of the game with a two-out basehit and Boyster followed with her second consecutive RBI double to stretch the advantage to 5-3.  Hannah Mauldin, running for Boyster, would later come across the plate to score the eventual game winning run.
The Lady Bulldogs, trailing 6-3, went back to work in the bottom of the fifth inning as McGonigal reached first base after being hit-by-a-pitch with two outs.  Tristy Toddy  reached on an error and Dilday followed with an RBI hit.  Sydney Sutherland was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases and Calhoun forced home a run with walk to cut the lead to 6-5.  Madden got a strikeout to get out of the inning as Newport held on for the win.
Madden earned the victory inside the circle as she allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out four.
Marshall, 8 for her last 9, led Newport with three hits and drove in two while Boyster had two hits and two RBIs.  Williams, Madden and Ally Hutchinson had a hit each.
Shipman suffered the loss for the Lady Bulldogs as she allowed six runs on eight hits and fanned nine in seven innings.
She also led the Tuckerman offensive attack with two hits - both doubles - and an RBI.  Dilday also had two hits for the Lady Bulldogs while Winemiller, Barnes, McGonigal, Toddy and Sutherland had a hit each.
