  • The Newport Lady Greyhounds’ tough luck in conference play continued April 5 as they traveled to Cleburne County to take on the Lady Panthers of Heber Springs.
Despite allowing only five hits and walking only one, Newport’s Ashton Madden suffered the loss as three Lady Greyhound errors led to five unearned runs as Newport fell 6-3 on the road.
Heber Springs two unearned runs in the home half of the first and three more in the home half of the third inning for a 5-0 lead.
Newport scored a run in the top of the fourth inning as Haley Watson drew a leadoff walk moved up to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on Mallory Watson’s RBI basehit.
After Heber Springs scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to regain their five-run advantage, 6-1, Newport answered with two in the seventh for the final margin.
Emily Lowery led off the seventh with a single and was followed by a single by Madden.  Sissy Boyster and Ally Hutchinson each had RBI basehits for Newport in the frame.
Mallory Watson led Newport at the plate with a 3-3 day and an RBI.  Boyster and Hutchinson had a hit and an RBI each while Taelehs Williams, Lowery and Madden also had hits.
