  • For the second time in as many years at Morgan Gilbert Field, the Newport Greyhounds used a 10-run first inning to jump on the Tuckerman Bulldogs in the Battle For the Bone series.
The opening game of the two-game set saw the Greyhounds play their best game of the year - at least offensively - as they turned in season highs in runs scored and hits in a 19-3 five-inning victory over their county rivals.
The Greyhounds sent 16 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, scoring 10 times and leaving the bases loaded.
Newport coupled that with an eight-run second inning to end any thoughts of a Tuckerman comeback.
The Greyhounds added single runs in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth for their runs.
Tuckerman scored a single tally off Newport starter and winning pitcher Grant Black in the home half of the second inning and pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third frame for the final margin.
Colton Willis also threw two innings of relief for the Hounds.
Grant Black connected for a first inning home to highlight the nine-hit barrage.
The hitting star Friday was designated hitter McCabe Cordell who led off the second inning with his first homerun of the season and was the second of his four hits on the day to lead the Newport attack.  He had two doubles and a single to go along with his longball and drove in five.
Gunnar Bullard also had four hits for Newport and drove in three in the victory.
The Bulldogs scratched across a run in the second as Trey Thornton drew a one-out walk and later scored on an RBI groundout by Tyler Chatman.
Zack McArthur, who led the Bulldogs with three hits on the day, led off the third with a basehit to get a two-run rally started.
After a flyout, Cade Niswonger reached on a Newport error as did Wil Hubbard.
Both McArthur and Niswonger scored in the frame.
Tuckerman starter Spencer Shannon suffered the loss on the mound as he pitched 1.1 innings.  Niswonger and McArthur also saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs.
Drake Hopkins had the only other hit for the Bulldogs in the loss.
The two teams will get together Friday, April 13 at 4 p.m. at George Kell Park for the second game of the two-game series for the Battle For the Bone.
