  • The Newport Lady Greyhounds and Tuckerman Lady Bulldogs hooked up Thursday, April 12 in the second game of the Annual Battle for the Bone series between the county rivals.
Newport entered the contest having won the first meeting 6-5 while the Lady Bulldogs knew they had to win by more than two runs to retain the bone they won for the first time in 2011, to overcome the runs allowed tie-breaker.
Following true-to-form, the two teams battled in another close contest for the first three innings, heading to the fourth inning knotted up at 2-2.
However, the Lady Bulldogs pushed across four runs in the top of the fourth to break the game open and leave with an 8-3 victory - and the trophy for the second consecutive season.
Freshman Hailey Clark broke open the scoring with a two-run, two-out, bases-loaded single to score Kati Cloud and Lyz Winemiller and give Tuckerman a 2-0 lead.
Newport answered immediately as Taelehs Williams connected for a one-out double, following a passed ball, Mallory Watson plated Williams after she reached on an error.  Ashton Madden scored Mallory Watson with an RBI basehit to tie the game.
The Lady Bulldogs used consecutive walks to Tristy Toddy and Allyson Barnes to start the fourth to get the fourth inning started.  Following a sacrifice bunt, Cloud reached on an error to give Tuckerman the lead.  Emily Winemiller added to the lead with an RBI groundout before Lyz Winemiller and Sara Shipman drove home runs with back-to-back doubles.
Emily Winemiller added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out, two-run single to score Barnes, who had walked, and Cloud, who had singled.
Newport added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Jasmine Harris singled, stole second, moved to third on a Tuckerman throwing error and scored on an RBI groundout by Emily Lowery.
For Tuckerman, Lyz Winemiller and Clark had two hits each and combined to drive in three.  Emily Winemiller had a basehit and drove in three, Shipman had a hit and an RBI, Toddy, Sutherland and Cloud had a hit each.
Williams, Madden, Sissy Boyster, Haley Watson and Harris had a hit each for the Lady Greyhounds.  Mallory Watson, Madden and Lowery had an RBI each.
