  • The Newport Lady  Greyhounds and Lonoke Lady Jackrabbits spent Tuesday afternoon concluding a game which they started four days ago.
Mother Nature sent Lonoke back home after just two innings last Friday trailing 2-0 with the game in the third inning.
The game was suspended with Lonoke runners on first and second with no one out in the top of the third inning.
Upon its resumption, conference champions Lonoke wasted little time taking control of the contest, scoring 10 times in the top of the third inning as they took advantage of two Newport errors, five hits and five walks to put the game away.
Lonoke added three runs in the top of the fourth and one more in the fifth for the final 14-2 margin.
Newport had taken a 2-0 lead last Friday in the home half of the second inning as Ally Hutchinson connected for a one-out triple.  Haley Watson singled to plate Hutchinson.
Jasmine Harris forced Haley Watson at second base for the second out before coming around to score on a double by Taelehs Williams.
Mallory Watson suffered the loss inside the circle for Newport as she tossed five innings.
Williams led the Lady Hounds with two hits - including a double - and an RBI.  Sissy Boyster, Hutchinson, Haley Watson and Harris all had a hit each.
After closing out the regular season, Newport will host the 2-4A District Softball Tournament beginning today at 4:30 p.m. at Lady Greyhound Field with Newport taking on Cave City.
The winner of that game will take on Heber Springs immediately following the first game.
