  • Dogs earn 18th straight trip to regionals

  • For the 18th consecutive season, Coach Morgan Gilbert has led his Tuckerman Bulldogs into the Regional Tournament.
    In what was deemed early as a “rebuilding” year, the Bulldogs earned their latest postseason trip after overcoming a 7-1 deficit at the end of five innings.
    The Bulldogs scored nine runs over their final three at-bats to walk off with a10-9 victory and a trip to the regionals, which they will host this weekend at Morgan Gilbert Field.
    In the home half of the seventh, trailing 9-8, Cade Niswonger reached on an infield hit and scored on a hit-and-run double by Wil Hubbard.  Trey Thornton plated Hubbard with an RBI single to continue the streak for the Bulldogs.
    Zack McArthur picked up the victory on the mound as he allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of relief of Hubbard who allowed seven runs on six hits in five innings.
    Josh Cooper, Thornton and Hubbard had two runs batted in each, while Spencer Shannon led the Bulldogs with four hits.
    The Bulldogs advanced to the 3-3A Finals Saturday afternoon with a 5-4 victory over the regular season champion, Rivercrest Colts in the semi-finals.
    Trailing 3-0, the Bulldogs took a 4-3 lead before the Colts knotted the game 4-4 heading into the seventh inning.
    In the final frame, Thornton again delivered the game-winning hit with an RBI single in the top of the seventh as the Bulldogs held on for the win.
    McArthur again got the win as he allowed four runs on six hits and struck out six while walking two.
    In their third championship meeting in four season, the Manila Lions once again knocked off the Bulldogs 9-2 to claim the Regional championship and the number one seed in this week’s Regional Tournament.
    Tuckerman opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second as Buddy Adams drove home Drake Hopkins to give the Bulldogs a short-lived 1-0 advantage.
    Manila scored three times in the top of the top of the third before the Bulldogs answered with a single tally of their own in the home half of the frame.
    McArthur and Shannon singled to start the frame and both runners moved up on a passed ball before Niswonger plated a run with a groundout.
    However, the Lions two runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth and one more tally in the seventh for the final margin.
    Hubbard suffered the loss as he allowed eight runs on 10 its and struck out one in 4.2 innings.  Niswonger allowed one run on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief.
    The Bulldogs will host Yellville-Summit Friday, May 4 at 2:30 p.m at Morgan Gilbert Field in their opening contest of the Regional Tournament.
    Page 2 of 2 - In other action, the tournament gets underway Friday at noon as Flippin will take on Rivercrest.
    Following the Tuckerman contest, Manila will take on Valley Springs at 5 p.m. and Mountain View will face Corning at 7:30 p.m. in the nighcap.
