  • After reaching the Regional Tournament each of the past two seasons, Coach Mark Hindsley was looking to build the success of his first two teams at Newport High School into a trip to the 2012 State Tournament.
However, offensive woes which plagued the Greyhounds this year, caught up with Newport in the opening round of the district tournament as his squad could manage only two runs despite pounding out nine hits and fell to Heber Springs, 4-2.
Newport jumped in front early as Michael Reynolds led off with a basehit, stole second base and scored when Gunnar Bullard reached on a Heber Springs error.
The 1-0 lead held until the top of the fifth inning as a two-out walk and two Newport errors gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
The Panthers added two runs in the top of the sixth as a walk, single and passed ball put runners in scoring position and both runners scored on squeeze bunts by Heber Springs.
Grant Black got the final rally started as he legged out a one-out double and scored when Reid Johnson reached on a two-out error.  However, the Hounds would get no closer.
Reynolds suffered the loss on the mound as he allowed two runs on one hit and struck out seven while walking four.  Black allowed two runs on one hit and struck out four in two innings of relief.
Johnson and Kordre Taylor had two hits each for Newport to lead the offense, while Reynolds, Black, Gunnar Bullard, Colton Willis and Hayden Schulz had a hit each.
