  • Down to their final out, the Tuckerman Lady Bulldogs reached deep in the opening round of last weekend’s Regional Tournament as they downed Mountain View, 2-1, in thrilling fashion.
Unable to muster any offense, the Lady Bulldogs, trailing 1-0 since the third inning, managed only two baserunners - one on a third inning error and one on a fourth inning basehit - before rallying for the win.
After the first two batters were retired in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Bulldogs gained their first glimmer of opportunity as Allyson Barnes reached on a two-out basehit.  Katelyn McGonigal and Tristy Toddy followed with two-out hits to load the bases and set the stage for the game’s most telling moment.
Kati Cloud, who has “the fastest set of hands on the team,” according to Coach Debbie Skaggs, battled emotions to connect for a two-run double down the leftfield line to send the Lady Bulldogs back to the State Tournament.
“It was a thrilling game,” Skaggs said, “I went to talk to Kati to try and calm her down a little and she was crying because of the nerves and the situation.  She just didn’t want to fail and she didn’t.  She stepped up big.”
Sara Shipman got the win on the mound as she allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven.
In the semi-finals, the Lady Bulldogs fell 11-2 to conference foe Rivercrest as the Lady Colts broke the game open with a seven-run fifth inning.
Tuckerman’s lone runs came when Hailey Clark tripled in the fifth inning and scored on an RBI groundout by Barnes and in the sixth inning when Hannah Dilday, who had walked, scored on an RBI hit by Shipman.
In the consolation game, the Lady Bulldogs secured third place with a 10-3 victory over Corning.
Lyz Winemiller got the scoring started for the Lady Bulldogs as she walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Barnes.
Tuckerman added two more run in the second as Tristy Toddy reached on an error and Cloud followed with a basehit.  Both runners scored on an RBI basehit from Emily Winemiller.
A six-run fourth inning put the game away for Tuckerman as Cloud, Emily Winemiller, Lyz Winemiller, Shipman, Clark and Barnes all scored in the frame.  Emily Winemiller drove in two more runners in the inning, Barnes drove in a run and Toddy drove in two with a double.
McGonigal scored the final run of the day on a passed ball after reaching base with a hit.
Tuckerman’s opening State Tournament game, originally scheduled for Thursday, May 10 at 2:30 p.m. was rescheduled for today at noon, so the Tuckerman seniors can return in time for graduation to be held at 7 p.mm
