  • Turns out that University of Arkansas junior Caleb Cross of Newport won more than the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and a fourth of the 4 x 100 relay while helping the Razorbacks win the SEC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships that concluded Sunday in Baton Rouge, La.
Cross won, too, the SEC Commissioner's Trophy as the meet's high point scorer, the SEC realized belatedly.
Auburn sprinter Keenan Brock was awarded Sunday night  the Commissioner Trophy winner for scoring 17.5 points during the four-day meet.
Cross, winning the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 50.30, finishing third (13.77) in the 110-meter hurdles and running the leadoff leg preceding Akheem Gauntlett, Neil Braddy and Marek Niit on  Arkansas' victorious 4 x 100 relay (39.23) scored a meet high 18.5 points.
However the SEC Office didn't realize it until notified Monday   by Arkansas track sports information director Zach Lawson of a mistake made not correcting for the Commissioner's Trophy standings the change in the meet scoring of Cross from second (8 points) to first (10) points for the 400-meter hurdles.
Originally, Carson Blank of Ole Miss was deemed the 400-meter hurdles winner until further review of the photo finish and the clocking declared Cross the winner by "one-thousandth of a second" Arkansas Coach Chris Bucknam said.
"Caleb's performance epitomizes the whole team," Bucknam said Tuesday of the Razorbacks rolling 196-118 over runner-up LSU enhanced by Cross passing three runners in the final 100 meters of the 400-hurdles.
"I was on the far turn where he hit that eighth hurdle pretty hard but charged to the finish. I wasn't at a good angle and it looked like he was leaning with the Ole Miss guy but I didn't think he had it. But I got texts from my other people saying 'Go check the camera.' They originally had the Ole Miss guy winning but checked the picture and went ahead and reversed the call.  So over-all I think that's how the Commissioner's Trophy got mixed up with the total points. Dorian (Ulrey, a Razorbacks senior distance runner in 2011) won it last year for most points scored at the meet. We discovered Caleb won it and we are happy for him.  It's a great honor for him."
Cross' trophy will be delivered to him in Fayetteville, Lawson said Monday.
Cross next competes in both hurdles and the 4 x 100 at next week's NCAA West Outdoor  Preliminary meet in Austin, Texas, the qualifying meet for next month's NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Ia.
