  • The Arkansas Correctional School has awarded the Hurshell D. Qualls Teacher of the Year Award to John Carter, Instructor at the Grimes Unit in Newport.
    Carter, an academic instructor at the Grimes Unit and resident of Newport, was honored at the 39th Annual Arkansas Correctional School graduation ceremony held at the Ouachita River Correctional Unit in Malvern, May 22.
    Carter was presented the award at the GED graduation ceremony by Eddie Rinchuso, Deputy Superintendent of the Arkansas Correctional School.  He was selected from among 70 instructors at the various prison units around the state as the recipient of the award.  General Wesley K. Clark, (Ret.), was the commencement speaker.
    The Arkansas Correctional School has academic programs in 21 correctional facilities around the state.  All inmates who do not have a high school diploma or GED are required to participate in an academic program during their incarceration.  During this school year, 877 inmates earned their GED credential (high school equivalency), with some 400 attending the graduation ceremonies May 22.
