  • George Kell Motors stepped out of zone play - and up in competition - last weekend as they traveled to Texarkana to take part in a pool play tournament.
While results were mixed, Coach Michael Long was pleased with his squad's performance.
"I thought we played real well," he explained, "Texarkana's junior team, which we played first, is as good as any team we will see around here and their AAA team (the Razorbacks) are the defending state champions."
"We had an opportunity to win both those ball games and the middle game (Ennis, Texas) our kids battled hard and took control of the game late."
While going 1-2 in the tournament, Long believes he got out of it exactly what his team needed.
"We stepped up in competition and performed well, we had some adversity and came together a little bit and battled through it.  I'm real pleased with our effort and the outcome," he said.
In the opener, Michael Reynolds suffered the loss as Kell Motors dropped a 6-3 game to Texarkana's Jr. squad.
Texarkana opened the game with two base on balls and a single to load the bases in the bottom of the first inning before Reynolds settled down to strikeout the clean-up hitter, however a wild pitch and a Newport error allowed three runs in for a 3-0 deficit.
Kell Motors' deficit grew in the bottom of the third inning as a one-out hit batter and back-to-back singles again loaded the bases.  Following a strikeout, Reynolds gave up a two-run single and a wild pitch to fall behind 6-0.
Newport battled back, cutting the lead in half, in the top of the fourth inning.  Back-to-back walks to Grant Black and Wil Hubbard put runners on first and second with no one out.  Following a strikeout, Gunnar Bullard drove in a run with a double and Colton Willis plated two more with a two-run single.  However, that was as close as Kell Motors would get.
Reynolds allowed six runs on seven hits in six innings while striking out seven and walking two.
Spencer Shannon and Bullard had two hits each to pace the offense.  Willis and Cade Niswonger also had a hit each.  Willis had two runs batted in while Bullard also delivered a run.

    Ennis, Texas 2
In the middle set of their three-game stay in Texarkana, George Kell Motors broke open a 2-2 game in the fifth inning on their way to a 9-2 victory over the Titans of Ennis, Texas.
Grant Black picked up the victory on the mound as he allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four and walking four.
Page 2 of 3 - Newport got on the board first as Gunnar Bullard reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second base on a ground-out and scored on an RBI single by Cade Niswonger.
Kell Motors fell behind in the bottom of the second inning as a one-out Newport error and back-to-back two-out basehits drove home two runs for the Titans.
Kell Motors tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the third inning as Devante Neal singled, was balked to second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI ground-out by Spencer Shannon.
Newport broke the game open with three runs in the top half of the fifth inning as Michael Reynolds singled and stole second, Neal followed with a walk and both runners scored on an RBI double by Shannon.  After being balked to third base, Shannon scored on a sacrifice fly by Black for a 5-2 lead.
Kell Motors added some insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning as Reynolds reached on an error to get the inning started.  Neal followed with a double and Black walked to load the bases.  Wil Hubbard followed with an RBI single and Bullard plated two with a two-out single.
Neal led the Newport offense with two hits and scored three times.  Shannon had a basehit and three RBIs while Bullard had a hit and drove in two.  Hubbard and Niswonger had a hit and an RBI each.  Reynolds added a basehit and scored twice.
    Texarkana 6
    Kell Motors 3
The defending AAA state champion Texarkana Razorbacks broke a 1-1 tie with a three run third inning and held on to defeat George Kell Motors 6-3 Saturday night.
The Razorbacks reached on an error to start the home half of the first.  A double put runners on second and third with no one out before Kell Motors' hurler Devante Neal got an infield popup for the first out.  Texarkana pushed across the game's first run with a ground-out.
Newport tied the score in the top of the second inning as Matthew Duvall led off with a walk moved to third on a base hit by Colton Willis and scored when Cade Niswonger reached on a Razorback error.
After Texarkana scored three times in the bottom of the third inning for a 4-1 advantage, Kell Motors battled back, cutting the lead to one, 4-3, with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Wil Hubbard led off with a double and scored on a bunt by Duvall and a Texarkana error.  After Duvall was erased on a fielder's choice by Gunnar Bullard, Willis reached on another Razorback error and Niswonger plated Bullard with a ground-out.
Texarkana scored two insurance runs in the seventh inning for the final margin.
Page 3 of 3 - Neal took the loss on the mound as he allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out six in 5.2 innings of work.  Hubbard walked one in one-third of an inning.
