  • Coach Dustin McGee's Taylor Made Ambulance squad turned to their most consistent pitcher as Zone 2 action continued last Friday at George Kell Park.
Aside from his opening game performance against Jonesboro's Fat City, left-hander Rowan Mason has been McGee's go-to hurler early in the season.
Coming off a complete game victory over Marked Tree at the first part of last week, McGee handed the ball to the southpaw Friday afternoon as Taylor Made Ambulance dealt with Paragould's Glen Sain in a zone contest.
Mason kept the Glen Sain hitters off-balance had Taylor Made Ambulance poised for another thrilling finish until the sixth inning as a lead-off homer by the visitors broke a 2-2 tie - and the spirit of McGee's young squad - as Paragould tallied five runs in the sixth inning for a 7-2 victory.
Mason suffered the loss on the mound as he allowed six runs on four hits and struck out five while walking seven.  Hayden Schulz allowed one run on two hits and walked four in 1.2 innings of relief.
After Paragould had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Newport answered immediately.
Trey Thornton led off with a walk and Tristan Sweatt followed with a single.  Tyler Asher's sacrifice bunt was mishandled by Paragould to load the bases.  Seth Soden drew a bases-loaded walk to score Thornton and Sweatt scored on a double-play ground-out to tie the score.
Taylor Made Ambulance was not without chances to take control of the game as they twice left the go-ahead runner at third base and stranded another at second.
Schulz had two hits to lead the Newport offense in the opener while McCabe Cordell, Reid Johnson and Sweatt had a hit each.  Soden had an RBI.
