  • She was born May 9, 1927, in Beedeville, the first child of Henry David Reid, Sr. and Ida Mae Melton Reid. Miss M. Allene Reid married Mr. Calvin Charles Koettel Dec.2, 1944, at the home of Mary Francis and Bud Fields in Beedeville. The couple made their home in Remmel. During their years in Arkansas, Mrs. Koettel worked at Victor Metal, Brown’s Shoe Factory and Wal-Mart. They moved several times over the years between Arkansas and Iowa, as they accepted transfers with Mr. Koettel’s position at Victor Metal. During their stay in Iowa, she became a floral designer and worked at Frank’s Florist in Iowa City, Iowa. After Mr. Koettel’s death in 1976, Mrs. Koettel moved to Searcy. There, she resumed working at Wal-Mart. Because of her straightforward attitude, she and Mr. Sam Walton forged a lasting friendship. Everyone, including Mr. Sam Walton, could always depend on Mrs. Koettel to say what she meant and to mean what she said. Often it was said if you do not want to know what she really thinks, do not ask. Mrs. Koettel’s led a full life. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, making candy and reading. Mrs. Koettel loved her roses, and was known for making the best peanut brittle and divinity. Mrs. Koettel was a devoted member of the College Street Church of Christ in Searcy. Every morning for well over 20 years, she began her day by reading her Bible. Mrs. Koettel would read the entire Bible through in less than a year and then start again. Mrs. Allene Koettel was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt. She proudly bore the title of “Matriarch of the Reid Family” and held steadfastly to her independence and strong-minded, straightforward ideals. Mrs. Koettel will be missed by many family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Calvin Charles Koettel; two brothers, Henry Davis Reid, Jr. and Ray Reid; and two sisters, Fay Reid and Jonita Kay Reid Darling.
