  • That same group fired the first salvos as two incumbent board members lost re-election bids Tuesday night in the annual school board elections. Controversy had surrounded the elections as 2010 census figures altered four districts totaling approximately 250 voters. One report from the state had all positions open for election Tuesday night, however, it was determined that the board could choose to hold elections for only those positions which would have normally come up for election. The board voted unanimously to hold elections as was previously scheduled which upset some district patrons. Unofficial results from Jackson County Clerk Melanie Clark’s office show that Billy Inman defeated the incumbent Kathy Green 46-24 for the Zone 3 position. In the battle for the At-Large, Position 7 post, Eddie Cooley defeated Donnie Schulz 227-122. Schulz had been to selected to fulfill the remainder of former board director Billy Keedy’s term upon his resignation last year. The Newport Special School District will hold their next meeting Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. in the board room of the Administration Building on the high school campus.
