Mrs. Ruby Irene (Shirley) Walker, lifelong resident of Newport, departed this life Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at her home, at the age of 94.
Mrs. Walker was born May 4, 1918, in Newport, the daughter of James Thomas and Ella James (Dunlap) Shirley. She was a devoted member of Holden Avenue Church of Christ. Mrs. Walker was affectionately known by most of Jackson County as “Grandma Ruby” and she most loved her role as Mother, Grandmother, and Family’s Best Cook. Mrs. Walker’s table was open to anyone and everyone. Every Sunday for as long as her health allowed, she cooked “Sunday Dinner” for her family and anyone else who joined them. Mrs. Walker truly loved cooking and baking and loved her flowers. Her greatest joy was her family. Mrs. Walker was preceeded in death by her husband, William Bryan Walker Feb. 8, 1983; and by a son, Gilbert Dean Walker Sept. 30, 1976. She is survived by three sons, Garland Lee Walker and wife, Naomi, of Newport, Jimmy Dale Walker and wife, Sandra, of Newport, and Jerry Wayne Walker of Newport; one daughter, Betty Sides and husband, Harvey, of Newport; one daughter-in-law, Cherry (Clark) Walker Hunter of Newport; 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and two special caregivers, Terersa Cheshier and Shirley Burgess. Friends visited at the funeral home, Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Jackson’s Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Mr. J.L. May and Mr. Raymond Davis. Burial followed in Gracelawn Cemetery at Tuckerman. Those honored to serve as pallbearers were her grandsons, Ricky Walker, Ronnie Walker, Randall Sides, Steven Sides, Troy Sides, Corey Sides, Brett Walker, Jeremy Walker, Jason Walker, Jordan Walker, and Dean Walker.
