Eighty-eight volunteers participated in Ninth Annual “Trashiest Team Clean-Up Contest” Sept. 7-8. Hosted by the Newport Area Chamber of Commerce, the Trashiest Team Contest is held in conjunction with the Great Arkansas Clean-Up through Keep Arkansas Beautiful.
Newport Recycling Center was this year's winning team by collecting the most trash on a one-mile stretch of road. Other teams participating this year included ASU-Newport Ambassadors, ASU-Newport Student Government Association, Lindley Health & Rehab, Merchants & Planters Bank, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Cub Scout Webeloes 264 and approximately 45 students with the Newport Schools ROTC program. Julie Allen, director of the Newport Area Chamber of Commerce, was pleased with this year's turnout. “Participants did an exceptional job,” she said. “They contributed 132 volunteer hours to clean up over 10 miles of roadways and public land/parks. Teams picked up 147 bags of trash and debris in and around Newport.” Volunteers were provided with a free clean-up t-shirt from Keep Arkansas Beautiful.
