The Arkansas State University-Newport Continuing Education department will offer a beginning sewing class Oct. 18.

The class will run from 6-8 p.m. and the fee is $15, which includes a sewing kit. The class will be taught by seamstress Jennifer Loftin. Members of the class will learn about the basic equipment used in sewing and how to use a needle, thread, sewing scissors, pins and tape measure. Also covered in the class will be shank and flat buttons, and how to sew on each type. Basic hemming will also be covered during the two-hour session. The class is limited to 14 students.
