Newport Police Department Investigators are looking for the person responsible for the robbery of a convenience store employee Saturday, Oct. 13.
According to a press release filed by Newport Police Department Lt. Patrick Weatherford of the Criminal Investigations Division, officers were dispatched to the Mapco Express, 1020 Third Street, where upon their arrival they found the victim, Linda Jennings, standing in the parking lot with injuries to her left arm.
Jennings told the officers that she was walking to her vehicle when a black male came up behind her and struck her, knocking her to the ground. The suspect attempted to take Jennings' purse, however, she resisted.
He was finally able to wrestle the purse away from the victim and fled on foot toward Arrington Street.
An eyewitness attempted to chase the suspect before losing sight of him. Officers conducted an extensive search of the area but were unable to locate the suspect.
Jennings was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries and was later released.
