  • The prestigious award recognizes outstanding and innovative programs and practices that are successfully leading community colleges. The awards are presented annually at the Community College Futures Assembly, which will be held Jan. 26-29 in Orlando, Fla.  The Assembly is sponsored by the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida and focuses on cutting-edge, trendsetting programs that other colleges might find worthy of replicating.
The program, developed by Jack Osier, Associate Professor of Renewable Energy Technology and Duane Doyle, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, focuses on multiple modes of delivery to students and how they acquire knowledge from the different forms of interaction.  Highlighted in the program is Arkansas State University-Newport’s method of developing compressed video courses for its Renewable Energy Technology program that allow the students to engage in online coursework and content as well as the traditional classroom setting.   Students participate by using the compressed video network within their schools, online through the ASUN website, in-person on ASUN’s Newport campus, or on certain days, the instructor travels to their location.
“The more avenues we can use to reach the students, the more effective the instruction becomes,” said Osier.
Osier is the primary instructor for the courses, while Doyle has assisted with custom-designing the curriculum into more than just compressed video courses.
The Bellwether Awards are given annually in three categories to colleges with outstanding and innovative programs or practices.  Categories include Instructional Programs and Services, Government and Finance, Economic Development, and Planning.  The Bellwether Award has been compared to football's Heisman Award because it is competitively judged and is an award given by your peers in community colleges, with no cash award.  It has also been called "the award of awards" because many institutions with programs that have won other awards apply for the Bellwether Award.
