Mrs. Marianne “Anne” Ponder Snapp of Newport, formerly of Walnut Ridge, departed this life at her home in Newport Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012.
Born Dec. 10, 1938, in Little Rock, she was the daughter of Harry Lee Ponder, Jr. and Marianne Parish Ponder.
Anne graduated from Walnut Ridge High School in 1956. She attended the University of Arkansas and Williams Baptist College. On Aug. 10, she married the love of her life, Mr. James Russell “Jimmy” Snapp. The couple made their home in Walnut Ridge, raised their children and enjoyed 53 years together.
A quiet philanthropist, Anne gave of herself in countless ways over the years, and generously helped those in need without expectation. In the 1970s, she was instrumental in the organization of the Thrift Shop, one of the first second-hand stores in the area. She volunteered many hours at The Children’s Shelter in Walnut Ridge, rocking and loving troubled children.
During her working years, she served as Program Coordinator of the Walnut Ridge First United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime active and devoted member. She was also a beloved Sunday School teacher and youth leader for decades.
Anne was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Newport, and her faith was evident in all aspects of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Russell “Jimmy” Snapp, on June 20, 2011, and her parents.
She is survived by her children, The Reverend James Russell “Russ” Snapp, Jr., of Little Rock, Marianne Snapp Ditto of Hoxie and Susan Ponder Snapp Waits of Memphis, Tenn.; one brother, Hal Ponder of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren, Cpt. Jeremy Tillman of Ft. Bragg, N.C., Brennan Weeks of Jonesboro, Jennifer Tillman of Carbondale, Ill., Jessica Kelly of Jonesboro, Alex Ditto of Hoxie, and Rachael Ditto of Hoxie; and seven great-grandchildren, Drake Weeks, Dawson Weeks, Emma Tillman, Lily Grace Tillman, Anne Marie Tillman, Katja Keyser, and Gunnar Keyser.
A reception was held Monday, Nov. 11, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Parrish House, with services following at 1 p.m. in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Interment followed at 4 p.m. at Lawrence County Memorial Park Cemetery in Walnut Ridge.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Cpt. Jeremy Tillman, Alex Ditto, Fielder Kelly, Scott Weeks, Jesse Keyser, Sam Allen, and Bob Dixon.
Memorial gifts may be given to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Newport, Arkansas, or The Children’s Shelter in Walnut Ridge.
