Evelyn Charlene Gowen, of Newport, passed away at Harris Hospital in Newport Friday, Nov. 9, 2012.
Mrs. Gowen would have celebrated her 90th birthday Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012. She was a resident of Newport for 29 years.
Mrs. Gowen was born in Vanndale. She was a homemaker and a member of the Faith Missionary Baptist Church. While she was living in Wynne many years ago, she and her husband, Scott, started Grace Baptist Church in their home. Today the church is still in existence.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Scott J. Gowen of Newport; father and mother, Robert Martin Carter and Ida Lee Ables Carter; one brother, Robert Carter; and four sisters, Vera Lloyd, Laverne Davis, Helen Hill and Inez Sims, who passed away two days prior to Mrs. Gowen.
Survivors are her son, Jim S. Gowen and wife, Nita, of Newport; one brother, C.L. Carter and sister, Wilma Jean Waegtmeyer and husband, Bill, all of Wynne; grandchildren, Jim Gowen, Jr. and wife, Cindy, of Newport; Tammy Jennings and husband, Larry, of Marshall; and Denisha Young and husband, Chance, of Monticello. Great-grandchildren are Alex Coffman and husband, J.A., of Jonesboro; Zoe Jennings of Marshall; and Scott Gowen of Newport.
Burial was at the Vanndale Cemetery in Vanndale Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 with Rev. Eddie Holt officiating.
