According to Lt. Patrick Weatherford of the Newport Police Department, Richard Ingram, now 23, of Newport, was arrested and appeared in Newport District Court as a result of the death of his son, Damarrius Thomas, who would have celebrated his second birthday, Aug. 28 2010.
Officers responded to a call Friday, Aug. 13, 2010 at 6:40 p.m. on Lacy Drive in Newport where they found Thomas not breathing. The infant was transported to a local hospital where emergency resuscitative efforts were performed before he was later transferred by helicopter to Arkansas Children's Hospital.
He passed away Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010 at 12:12 p.m. at Children's Hospital.
According to testimony by Lt. Weatherford in District Court, autopsy results on Damarrius Thomas showed that the infant had suffered "a broken back, multiple deep bruises to his back, buttocks and upper legs, as well as neck injuries and catastrophic brain trauma." The autopsy was performed by the Arkansas State Crime Lab.
