Arkansas State University-Newport played host last week to a three-day seminar conducted by Lead Arkansas (LeadAR).

The Economic and Community Development Issues seminar was held Dec. 6-8 on the ASUN campus. The LeadAR program is a two-year life-changing event for emerging leaders from rural and urban communities throughout Arkansas.  The two-year program consists of 11 three-day seminars, three of which have been held in Newport.  The seminars focus on skills in communication, interpersonal relations, networking, economics, policy formation, role of government and social and cultural understanding. Seminars are conducted by political and business leaders, state and federal agency personnel, university staff, and others. Each class also participates in a twelve-day study tour to another state and Washington, D.C. to learn about issues beyond our borders and those affecting our nation.  “At some of the previous meetings in Little Rock, the attendees realized that some of the issues related to larger cities more than the rural communities,” said Jon Chadwell, Executive Director of the Newport Economic Development Commission and an alumnus of the LeadAR program.  “They were looking for a site that would enable them to bring home information that was maybe a little more relevant to their communities, and Newport was chosen as that site.” The goal of the LeadAR program is to raise participants’ knowledge and understanding of the economic and social changes affecting Arkansas through the practical application of leadership skills and development of expertise to address critical problems facing their communities.
“At ASU-Newport we certainly recognize the importance of programs like LeadAR to our community and to communities throughout the state,” said ASU-Newport Chancellor Dr. Larry Williams.  “We were happy to have them on our campus and look forward to continued cooperation with them in the future.”Arkansas State University-Newport is a degree granting community college with campuses in Jonesboro, Marked Tree and Newport, Arkansas.  It is a part of the Arkansas State University System.  For more information about what is going on at ASU-Newport, visit us on our Facebook page at, where you will find news and photos highlighting achievements and events at all three campuses.  Follow us on Twitter for quick information about what is going on at ASUN by following @ASUNewport.
