  • According to Lt. Patrick Weatherford, on Wednesday, Dec. 26, Newport Police Department officers were dispatched to Wal Mart in reference to a person breaking into vehicles. The complainant stated that he was an employee of Wal Mart and that his checkbook had been stolen from his car. Video surveillance showed that the suspect was driving a white Jeep Cherokee. The following day a person who identified themselves as Austin Hall attempted to cash a check on the account of the victim at a local bank. After refusing to cash the check, the bank contacted the NPD and a short time later officers located Hall and took him into custody without incident. A search of his residence revealed the presence of the victim's checkbook as well as a second checkbook from a victim whose vehicle was burglarized at a local grocery store. Hall was subsequently interviewed and admitted that he broke into these two vehicles and attempted to cash a check on the first victim. Hall is currently being held at the Jackson County Detention Center on the charges of Breaking or Entering (two counts), Theft of Property (two counts), and Forgery in the Second Degree. His bond was set at $5,000 and will appear in Jackson County Circuit Court on Jan. 17, 2013.
