Blood supplies remain at critical levels in Arkansas. All blood types are needed but any of the negative types are very much in demand, especially O- and B-. Blood type O is the universal donor and can be given to anyone. A- and O+ are also in great demand.
Donors must be in good health; 17 years of age or older; at least 110 pounds; and have not donated blood in 56 days. Careful screening and safety procedures mean that donors are protected when they donate, as is the blood supply. To see if you can donate blood go to www.givelife.organd click on Being a Donor.
Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood and just one pint of donated blood has the potential to help three to four people. More than 38,000 pints of donated blood are used every day in the United States to help save the lives of cancer patients, accident victims, and children with blood disorders, among others. Not only is the blood given directly to patients, but it is used for research as well. Many diseases have been all but wiped out due to extensive work using donated blood.
