  • Officers arrived and located a witness who stated that a subject had been on his porch and had gone to another residence. Officers located the subject at a residence on Laurel Street. The occupant of the residence stated that the subject had just shown up and said he had been shot and needed an ambulance. During this investigation, victim Marvin Hoggan (age 32, black male, from Newport) stated that he was at his residence at 405 Leona Street when two subjects, both known to him, came inside his residence. According to Hoggan, LEOTIS GIST JR. (age 20, black male, from Newport) confronted him about a previous dispute with NICO COX (age 23, black male, from Newport). COX then told GIST to “shoot him” and GIST fired at least three rounds at Hoggan using a 9mm handgun. Hoggan was struck once in the buttocks and the bullet exited his groin area. Hoggan then ran from the residence and went to nearby homes seeking assistance. Hoggan was transported to a local hospital and then transferred to a Little Rock hospital. Hoggan’s injuries are not expected to be life-threatening. On March 19, GIST and COX were both arrested and transported to the Jackson County Detention Center. They appeared in Newport District Court on March 20 where they were charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree. Their bonds were each set at $150,000. Both suspects will appear in Jackson County Circuit Court on April 22, 2013.
