  • Clark County officials are investigating the series of events after authorities in North Carolina found a woman's body in the trunk of a car earlier this week.
Kevin Bolton, 37, is being held on an array of charges in North Carolina. An obituary in the Hope Star today indicates that a 20-year-old Gurdon woman, Cassie Carter, died in North Carolina Wednesday. Officials have yet to confirm the connection.
The body was reportedly discovered in the trunk of a car after a police chase on the Cherokee Reservation near the small Appalachian town of Sylva, the seat of Jackson County.
News agencies there reported the discovery was made Wednesday when a man fled from police in a car.
Online records from North Carolina's Jackson County Jail indicate that charges against Kevin Dwayne Bolton, 37, range from failure to report a death and possession of a stolen automobile to fleeing, possession of meth and extradition to another state.
His bond has been set at $300,000.
The police chief in Cherokee told reporters that a BOLO (Be on the Lookout For) was received there from Clark County. The chief said the BOLO was placed "referencing a person that may be in danger, a missing person." It has not been said how investigators tracked Bolton to North Carolina.
When officers located the car, a short police chase ensued, with the suspect being chased down a dead-end road. That's when the suspect was taken into custody and the discovery of the body was made.
The cause of death has not been released, but the victim's body was taken to Charlotte, N.C., for an autopsy, according to news agencies there.
Local police began the search for Cassie Carter this weekend.
According to a police report on file at the Gurdon City Marshal's Office, the mother of 20-year-old Cassandra Carter reported her missing on Saturday morning — three days after she had last talked to her on March 13 just before 1 a.m.
The missing person report indicates that Carter was likely in the company of Kevin Bolton, but the officer writing the report noted authorities were unable to locate either Carter or Bolton.
Carter's obituary, as published today in the Hope Star reads:
"Cassandra Nicole “Cassie” Carter, 20, formerly of Gurdon, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, in Cherokee, North Carolina. Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott."
Sheriff Jason Watson has been in Jackson County, N.C., since Wednesday. Neither he nor Clark County Prosecutor Blake Batson are commenting on the case.
