The Newport Police Department is investigating a series of burglaries in Newport that occurred during the early morning hours of May 14.

According to Lt. Patrick Weatherford, Newport Police Department, officers were initially called to the scene of two suspicious vehicles in the area of Hwy. 367 N at around 3 a.m. Police say officers began to canvass the area and saw two black males attempting to load a large safe from Affordable Wheels, 1004 Hwy 367 N., into a vehicle which also belonged to the dealership. The men, according to police, fled on foot into the neighborhood located behind the business and were able to elude capture. Upon further inspection of the area, police say they found that neighboring businesses Safe-T Brake, 914 Hwy 367 N., and Carlon James Motor Company, 900 Hwy 367 N., had also been burglarized. Several hours later, police say they received a call from Kroger, 2200 Malcolm, reporting an attempted burglary after finding damage to a back door. No arrest have been made as police continue to investigate.
