The Arkansas Correctional School awarded the Hurshell D. Qualls Teacher of the Year Award to Mindy Schulz, instructor at the McPherson Unit, Newport, Ark.
Mind Schulz, an academic instructor at the McPherson Unit, Newport, Arkansas, and resident of Newport, was honored with the Hurshell D. Qualls Teacher of the Year Award at the 40th Annual Arkansas Correctional School graduation ceremony that was held at the Quachita River Correctional Unit, Malvern, Arkansas, on May 23, 2013. Mrs. Schulz was presented the award at the GED graduation ceremony by Eddie Rinchuso, Deputy Superintendent of the Arkansas Correctional School. She was selected form among 70 instructors at the various prison units around the state as the recipient of the award. Dr. Stephen Schoonmaker, President, College of the Quachitas, was the commencement speaker. The Arkansas Correctional School has academic programs in 21 correctional facilities around the state. All inmates who do not have a high school diploma or GED are required to participate in an academic program during their incarceration. During the school year, 665 inmates earned their GED credential (high school equivalency), with some 315 attending the graduation ceremonies on May 23.
