On June 6, 2013, at about 2:00 AM, the Newport Police Department was dispatched to Newport High
School in reference to a burglary alarm.
Officers arrived and made entry into the school where they saw a person at the far end of a hallway who fled on foot and exited the school. Officers from the Newport Police Department and Jackson County Sheriff's Department searched for the suspect and were unable to locate him. Officers discovered that the suspect had made entry through a window in the Junior High and broke out windows in both the Junior and Senior High principal offices and gained entry. Officers found a plastic bag which contained some property that belonged to the school outside one of the doors. During this investigation, detectives collected evidence which linked the burglary to a 15 year old black male who is a student at the school. This juvenile had been reported on the same day as a runaway by his mother. Officers located the juvenile on June 11 and he was taken into custody and later transported to the White River Juvenile Detention Center in Batesville, AR. This juvenile appeared in juvenile court on June 12 where he was ordered to be held until the next court date. This subject is expected to be charged with Commercial Burglary, Theft of Property, and Criminal Mischief in the First Degree.
