According to Sheriff David Lucas, at around 10:11 p.m.Thursday, July 4, Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 1122 Jackson 68 after receiving a call of a fight.
According to police, the caller advised that an individual, identified as 49-year-old Connie R. Guffey, of Newport, had been struck in the head multiple times with an axe handle by Mitchell.
The caller also told police that Mitchell had fled the scene with his wife and minor children.
Upon arrival, police say they found Guffey suffering from head injuries as a result of the fight. Guffey was transported to Harris Hospital in Newport and later airlifted to UAMS in Little Rock.
According to police, Mitchell was located in Bald Knob early Friday morning following a search with the assistance of the Bald Knob Police Department, Bradford Police Department and White County Sheriff’s Office, and transported back to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office where he was booked into the detention center on the charges of First Degree Battery and three counts of Endangering Welfare of a Minor.
Mitchell appeared in district court on July 5, where his Bond was set at $500,000 and he was ordered to appear in the circuit court on August 7, 2013.
