Community: a unified body of individuals. That is what Stuff the Bus is for United Way of Northeast Arkansas’ eight-county service area. Parents, teachers, students and residents of Clay, Craighead, Cross, Greene, Jackson, Lawrence, Poinsett and Randolph will all be unified Saturday, August 3 for the common purpose of helping our kids succeed.
Stuff the Bus serves area elementary students who may not have the basic school supplies they need to succeed. This also saves teachers the expense of providing these items, sometimes from their own family budget. Donated supplies are put on the bus then taken to the participating school to be distributed to those students who need them throughout the school year. Starting with only 2 schools in 2005, the number of participating schools has expanded each year with this year’s event benefitting 25 area schools. In 2012 we were able to raise $5,521.95 and 26,287 packages of supplies. This year’s event is chaired by Misty Carr of Apex Tool Group. Misty has been instrumental in championing the event for the past 4 years and has once again recruited great site leaders for each location. Through the help and hard work of these leaders, hundreds of volunteers at 9 Walmart locations in 8 counties, and generous donors like you, thousands of area students will have what they need to be successful this school year. If you are not able to come out to your area Walmart August 3 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to support your local community, you can drop off school supply donations at United Way of Northeast Arkansas located at 407 Union in downtown Jonesboro, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. from now until Friday, August 10. United Way of Northeast Arkansas would like to thank partners, KAIT8, Jonesboro Radio Group and Crowley’s Ridge Development Council for their ongoing support for this event. United Way of Northeast Arkansas is working to advance the common good. One focus area is a quality education that leads to a stable job. For more information, contact Megan Scribner at 870-935-3658.
