The homeowner reported that they had left for a few minutes and came back to find that a window in their front door had been broken out which allowed unknown suspect(s) access to their home. Among the items stolen were two gaming consoles and several games. The Newport Police Department Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene. The homeowner pointed out a television which had been removed from a stand and placed into the floor. This television was processed for latent prints and investigators were able to lift two latent prints from the television screen.
These fingerprints were submitted to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory and were later positively identified as belonging to DEMETRIC DENTON, a 33 year old black male from Newport. At the time of this incident, DENTON lived in the same block as the victims.
“According to the victims, DENTON unexpectedly showed up at their home and asked to use their telephone. The next day their home was burglarized” stated Lt. Patrick Weatherford.
On August 28, a felony warrant was issued for DENTON charging him with the offenses of Residential Burglary and Theft of Property. DENTON was arrested on August 29 by officers were the Arkansas Department of Community Correction when he arrived for a parole visit. DENTON is currently incarcerated in the Jackson County Detention Center. He is expected to appear in Newport District Court on August 30.
