The Newport School District recently received notice from two different organizations recognizing the achievements of the School District and the Jr. High School.
The Arkansas Department of Education informed Superintendent Larry Bennett that based on the state accountability system the Newport School District is awarded the status of an “Achieving” School District. This status is based on the annual student assessment program directed by the State of Arkansas. The rating labels for districts are Exemplary, Achieving, Needs Improvement, Focus School and Priority Schools. Each year, the Office for Education Policy (OEP) at the University of Arkansas creates a report titled the Outstanding Educational Performance Awards highlighting the highest-performing schools in Arkansas based on the Benchmark and End-of-Course exams. It was announced that Newport Junior High School won a “High-Achieving Schools” OEP award. These awards are based on the OEP-created “school GPA,” calculated on the basis of the percentage of students that perform at a particular level on the Benchmark exam (advanced, proficient, basic, and below basic). “High-Achieving Schools” awards are given to high-achieving schools for their performance on End of Course (EOC) exams in Algebra, Geometry, Biology, and the Grade 11 Literacy Exam. Newport Jr. High received recognition as one of the top ten Jr. High Schools in Arkansas based on their math achievement. The Jr. High was also recognized as one of the top five Jr. High Schools in North East Arkansas. "We are very excited about this recognition for our schools," stated Dr. Bennett. "Our students and staff have worked hard on improving the academics within the district and at each school level. Three short years ago, all of our schools were labeled as being in school improvement. I believe this is the beginning of some exciting times in the Newport School District. We have great students, great teachers and staff, a supporting community and a very proactive School Board. This combination of support is the foundation for what is to come."
