For the third consecutive year, The Joint Commission has bestowed the honor of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures on Helena Regional Medical Center. HRMC is just one of 182 hospitals in the country that has achieved that distinction three years in a row.
The Joint Commission recognized the local hospital for excellent performance in using evidence-based clinical processes to improve care for certain conditions including heart attack, pneumonia, surgery, children's asthma and stroke.
HRMC was among 1,099 U.S. hospitals to earn the distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measured performances.
“We understand what matters most to patients at Helena Regional Medical Center is safe, effective care,” commented HRMC Chief Executive Officer Buddy Daniels in a prepared statement. “That's why HRMC has made a commitment to accreditation on the positive patient outcome through evidence-based care processes. Helena Regional Medical Center is proud to receive the distinction of being a Joint Commission Top Performer on Key Quality Measures.”
To receive recognition as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures a hospital must achieve a cumulative performance of 95 percent or above on all reported accountability measures. A 95 percent score means a hospital provided and evidence-based practice 95 times out of 100 opportunities. Each accountability measure represents an evidence-based practice. For example providing aspirin on arrival of heart attack patients, giving antibiotics an hour before surgery, or providing a home management plan of care for children with asthma.
“HRMC and all Top Performer hospitals have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to quality improvement and they should be proud of their achievement,” stated Dr. Mark Chassin, Joint Commission president and CEO in a press release. “We have much to celebrate this year. Nearly half of our accredited hospitals have attained or nearly attained Top Performer distinction. This truly shows that we are approaching a tipping point in hospital quality performances that will directly contribute to better health outcomes for patients.”
Besides being included in The Joint Commission's “Improving America's Hospitals” annual report, Helena Regional Medical Center will be recognized on The Joint Commission's Quality Check website (www.qualitycheck.org), the Top Performer program will be featured in the December issues of The Joint Commission Perspectives and The Source.
