One inmate has died and an entire housing isolated due to what authorities believe to be a flu outbreak at the McPherson Unit in Newport.
According to Shea Wilson, Public Information Officer with the Arkansas Department of Correction, weekend visitations were cancelled after the death of one female inmate Saturday morning. Wilson says the woman had flu-like symptoms, but did not test positive for the flu. As a precautionary measure, Wilson says the entire housing area where the woman lived was put into isolation to avoid further contamination. As of Monday, Wilson said there were two confirmed cases of the flu at the prison and that extra medical staff had been brought in over the weekend to screen the population for the illness.
