  • Local karate group earns end of year awards

  • On March 7, Sweeneys Martial Arts Academy traveled to the Clarion Hotel Convention Center in West Memphis to receive their 2013 Arkansas Sport Karate Championship Awards.

  • Those earning awards are: 
    • Joshua Liles,  who was State Champion in ages 15-17 Advanced Point Sparring, first runner-up in ages 15-17 Black Belt Point Sparring, second runner-up in Traditional Forms Advanced and third runner-up in Black Belt Forms. 
    • Alice James, who was State Champion in ages 30-39 Black Belt Traditional Forms and State Champion in ages 30-39 Black Belt Sparring. 
    • Chancery Sutterfield, who was first runner-up in ages 15-17 Advanced Traditional Forms and Musical Weapons and second runner-up in Musical Forms. 
    • Erica Sweeney, who was State Champion in ages 15-17 Black Belt Traditional Forms, State Champion in ages 15-17 Black Belt Weapons/Musical Weapons and first runner-up in ages 15-17 Black Belt Sparring. 
    The first Arkansas Sport Karate Championship tournament of the year took place the following day at West Memphis High School. 
    Points earned there will count towards the 2014 Championships.
