Mr. Lavern “Doodle” Long, of Tuckerman, Arkansas, departed this life on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, in Searcy at the age of 91. He was born September 20, 1922, in Tuckerman, Arkansas, the son of Fred D. and Cynthia Ola (Castleberry) Long.
Mr. Long bought his farm in 1941, and spent his life working Long Farms in Tuckerman alongside his sons and son-in-law, and continued farming through the last farming season. His father was also an Arkansas farmer, growing mostly cotton. Mr. Long started growing rice in 1969, and also farmed soybeans, milo, and winter wheat. The Long Family was the 2007 Farm Family of the year. Mr. Long was a member of Farm Bureau, and enjoyed trapping mink and muskrats. He was a St. Louis Cardinals fan, and loved spending time with his family. His son, Greg, was his caregiver and constant companion since the death of his wife, Fay, the past 12 years. Mr. Long was a member of the First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church of Tuckerman.
Mr. Long was preceded in death by his wife, Molly “Fay” Long; one grandson, Gregory Lavern Long; one daughter, Carolyn Sue Long Hooker; two brothers, Junior and Cecil Long; and one great-great granddaughter, Bailey Faith Martindill.
He is survived by his children, Bill and Connie Long of Bald Knob, Arkansas, and their children: Onycha Long, Lesa Long, Todd Long, and Christy Long; Dennis and Patsy Long of Harrison, Arkansas, and their children: Priscilla Collier and Jayme Richie; Greg and Jeannie Long of Tuckerman, Arkansas, and their children: Michael Long and Haley Long Bethel and husband, Johnny; and Cathy Lynn and Billy Harris of Tuckerman, Arkansas, and their child, Brittany Harris Churchman and husband Charley; and children of Sue Hooker, Chip Hooker and Lois Ann Hooker; 12 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.
Friends visited at the funeral home, Thursday, April 3. from 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Teddy Rhea officiating and Rev. Diane Wimberly assisting. Interment followed in Gracelawn Cemetery.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Kenny Bowen, Devon Bryant, Caleb Reeves, Billy Ray George, Trevor Stevenson, and Rodney Stevenson, Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Bo Riley, Bob Penix, Wayne King, Dr. Ryan Koch, Justin Staggs, and Tony Papineau.
