City officials set to sign contract

Mayor David Stewart informed the Newport City Council the city is one step closer to beginning the process of levee certification during their meeting Monday night.
The contract between the city and Garver Engineering is ready and should be signed later this week, according to Stewart.
In other business:
-  Stewart also informed the city officials the 2009 sales tax revenue was $2,569 over the estimate of $1.3 million.
-Phill McDonald, Jackson County Historical Society president, submitted a resolution to establish a county board to maintain abandoned cemeteries.  Alderman Eddie Johnson moved to accept the resolution, but the resolution failed to receive a second from another council member.  McDonald plans to present the resolution at the Jackson County Quorum Court’s next meeting on March 9.

-  Stewart gave recognition to members of Project New Start for cleaning up snow around city hall.
-  The council’s next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 14 in observance of President’s Day.
