Four teams from the Newport Special School District competed in the Odyssey of the Mind regional tournament, and all four received first place in their divisions.
Gifted and Talented coordinator Brent Miller has spent several years participating in the contest as a competitor, a coach or a judge, and this is the first time he recalls a school taking first place with every team it entered.
"I have been doing this for 15 years, and I don't remember a time when all the teams from a school won first place," Miller said.
NSSD teams have been extremely successful at OM competitions in the past, and Miller credits the students for their effort.
"Newport has a great tradition of winning because we have several kids that are willing to work and give their time to prepare," Miller said.
The task of preparing for the contest begins in the fall, and more time is devoted to the team as the event nears.
"We get the competition problems in October, and the students work about an hour each week in the beginning," Miller said. "The time they spend gradually increases until they are working three to four hours a week."
The parents are also deserve some of the credit for Newport's winning tradition.
"We have some of the best parents in Arkansas because of all the time they spend working with the kids," Miller said. "We really do have a great community here."
The Albright Elementary School team won first place in Division Two for their solution to the food court problem. The seven team members are: Bailey Clark, Maci Grady, Rachel Gansz, Lacy Schultz, Zach Altom, Dalton Menley and Sarah Howard. They are coached by Leslie Altom and Mindy Schultz.
Newport High School entered three teams in the regional competition.
The seven-member team of Jacob Conditt, John Mark Robison, Savannah Sellers, Alyssa Smith, Abbey Jones, Kaitlin Shumate and Lexie Avance won first place in Division Three for their solution to the discovered treasures problem. They are coached by Sadie Bullard.
Michael Reynolds, Alyson Rohfling, Hannah Ray, Maci Scudder, Roger Faust and Teagan Martin won first place in Division Three for their solution to the food court problem. They are coached by Brent Miller and Sherri Rohfling.
