With the help of the Newport Independent, the  EAST Program built a big city newsstand for the 2010 Partnership National Conference.
Newspaper articles telling the story of Newport’s EAST were printed on real newspaper paper donated by the Independent.
The newspaper covered a 10 x 8 foot area.  Smaller versions of the newspaper were placed in a real newspaper box in a booth, also donated by the Independent.
Separate magazines covering projects of the uniform store, web site creation, fingerprinting, recycling, Kiwanis’ assistance, Jackson Country Learning Center assistance, and our redesign of the pavilion on campus. The magazines were handed out to other EAST schools, in a trade show atmosphere. 187 EAST schools attended the National Conference from across the nation.
In addition to Newport scoring Superior, Jeffrey Balch’s computer designed poster place 1st in the nation. His theme was ‘recycling’. The poster was 30 x 40 inches, and created in PhotoShop. According to Balch, “Since our recycling project is such a large part of our EAST program, I decided to go with a recycling theme for my poster. I figured a cool way to incorporate recycling into the whole ‘saving the earth’ line would be to have a tree made completely from recycling logos. It took about 2 weeks, and tone of layers in Photoshop, to get this poster done, and in the end, I thought I came out very nicely.”
Conference team members are: Jeffrey Balch, James Brannon, Marion Holloway, Blake Taylor, Brittany Long, Catherine Williams, Shayna Boyster, and Logan Bratcher. EAST Facilitator is Cindy Black, and Assistant Facilitator is Judy Beard.
The Newport Charitable Foundation’s grant of $2500 helped the group make the trip to the national conference.
