Arkansas State University-Newport (ASUN) announced that the college has adopted a resolution to name its criminal justice department the “Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford Criminal Justice Department” in honor and commemoration of local fallen police officer Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford.
A devoted husband and father, 15-year Newport police force veteran, former part-time ASU-Newport campus officer, and recent graduate of the FBI Academy in Quantico, Lieutenant Weatherford was shot and killed in the line of duty last June. He was a graduate of ASU-Newport and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and was also Jackson County’s 2016 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.
“Lieutenant Weatherford was a valued and respected member of both our local community and the ASUN community,” said ASUN Chancellor Dr. Sandra Massey. “It is an honor for us to pay tribute to him and associate his name with our institution – one that strives to teach students to be upstanding citizens and pursue excellence.”
