On Sunday, October 8, 2017, at approximately 6:12 PM the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a call stating a subject was in distress in the middle of the White River near the 7-11 Farm in Jackson County. At approximately 6:29 PM Jackson County Sheriff deputies arrived in the area along the bluff and was able to locate the victim identified as Jose Valencia, 43, of Bradford clinging to a log jam with a heavy current. Captain Ricky Morales, Sgt. Michael Long, and Deputy Glen Dugan responded by boat and made it to the location at approximately 6:56 PM and were able to conduct a water rescue pulling Mr. Valencia to safety. Valencia was transported back to the boat landing at the Blue Bridge in Newport and was evaluated by Newport Fire/ EMS. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating what led up to this incident and will update further as information becomes available.
