The Tuckerman High School History Club recently traveled to Pocahontas to Black River Technical College to hear a survivor of the Holocaust speak about their experience. The survivor began her presentation by showing photographs that were saved from her childhood by family in the United States. Rita Rubinstein was only four years old when her family was given twenty four hours to leave their home in what is now Ukraine. Her uncle bribed a solder with money sewn into their clothing and their family was taken to a Jewish ghetto in Transnistria instead of sent to death camps. Her family lived with a small village family who all worked in a labor camp. They remained there for three years before being liberated. The thirty Tuckerman High School students joined several hundred others in hearing his important story. At the end of the presentation, schools were able to take photos with Mrs. Rubinstein.
