On Friday, Nov. 17, Newport Police Department was notified at approximately 3:45 a.m. of a suspicious vehicle behind Darling's Pharmacy on McLain Street in Newport. Patrolman Brian Bickel arrived and observed a person exiting from the broken front door of the business and flee on foot around the building to the vehicle that was at the back.

Patrolman Bickel relayed this information to responding officers and Patrolman Steven Scudder observed the vehicle fleeing the scene and attempted to stop the vehicle. A vehicle pursuit then began which covered several miles and involved multiple law enforcement agencies. The vehicle pursuit ended in Cross County in Wynne in a residential area where the suspect fled on foot and was able to elude officers.

During the foot pursuit, Patrolman Scudder did intentionally discharge his firearm in the air as a warning shot to the fleeing suspect. This is in violation of Newport Police Department Policy and disciplinary measures have been taken regarding this incident.
