Karen Fortune Cathey announced her candidacy for Circuit Clerk of Jackson County this week.  Mrs. Cathey is the daughter of the late Bobby and Sugie Fortune.

A Newport native, she is a 1974 Graduate of Arkansas State University – Jonesboro, with an Associates in Science degree in Secretarial Science.  Following her graduation, she returned to Newport where she married Albert Cathey, Jr., also a lifelong resident of Newport. They have two children, Jason Cathey and Shane Cathey, and four grandchildren. “I’ve spent my life in Jackson County and this is an opportunity to give my time to the citizens of this great county,” she said.

Mrs. Cathey has worked in attorney offices for 23 years, the last 13 years as legal assistant and office manager for Watson & Watson. “Having worked in the legal field, I am familiar with what the Circuit Clerk’s responsibilities are and I feel that I am qualified for this position,” she said.

She also worked for 5 years in the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office as secretary to the late Sheriff Donald Ray. While there she set up and ran the Sheriff’s Hot Check Collection Program.  “The Circuit Clerk works closely with the Sheriff’s Department and I believe my experience will be a real asset, “Mrs. Cathey said.

She has worked in other offices in Newport gaining experience in customer service. “If elected, I promise to keep professionalism in the office and to be of service to all citizens,” she said.

“I will appreciate all your efforts and support in helping me get elected to this office,” Mrs. Cathey said.
