The Newport Police Department is gearing up for two heavy saturation events with the annual Click It or Ticket and Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaigns.
According to Captain Larry Dulaney, the initiatives are designed to remind motorists that wearing a seatbelt is the law and there is no tolerance for driving intoxicated. “We always want to make our presence known, for safety purposes and reassurance for the general public. In campaigns like these, we come out in force to remind the public that they are responsible for their safety and the safety of their loved ones in the vehicle with them.”
In 2016, there were 6,703 arrests for driving under the influence, 44 of them were under the age of 18. There were 1,769 arrests for other liquor laws, 219 of them under the age of 18. “We take offenses like driving under the influence very seriously,” Dulaney said. “When someone gets behind the wheel after drinking they have literally taken the lives of those with them and everyone else on the roadway into their hands. When a driver is impaired, there is no reasonable control of the vehicle or ability to negotiate standard driving procedures in their mind.” Arkansas law enforcement agencies worked 117 alcohol-impaired fatalities in 2016, 10 of those drivers were under the age of 21.
The Click It or Ticket campaign will begin May 21 and ends June 3. Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over begins Aug. 17 and ends Sept. 2.
