The 2018 Fishing Derby was held on Wednesday, June 6th is usually held in June at Lockwood Park here in Newport. The event is hosted by the Jackson County Conservation District, Jackson County University of Arkansas Extension Office, Jackson County 4-H and Farm Bureau of Jackson County. The Conservation District provided the fishing poles and prizes. Jackson County U of A Extension Office and Jackson County 4-H provided the bait, Greenway Equipment donated bottled and Farm Bureau provided the hot dogs, chips and cookies for lunch.
The event began at 9:30 am with registration and a safety lesson. After the safety lesson, the children fished for slightly over and hour. The workers kept records of the caught fish, length of the fish and total number caught by each participant. Lunch was provided for all in attendance, fisherman and parents. Awards were given to Blayne Boyce for the Most Fish Caught, Seth Cook for the Biggest Fish Caught and Dora Cook for the Smallest Fish Caught.
