Nearly 100 members, both men and women, of the Remmel church participated in “Church Outside the Walls” on Sunday, May 23.
The activity sent members throughout Newport and surrounding areas mowing lawns, picking up trash, clearing fence rows, cutting down dead trees, trimming trees, power washing, shampooing carpets, and hauling off tons of trash.
The contractors, licensed plumbers and electricians in the church, worked to fix plumbing problems, electrical difficulties and joined in numerous other tasks.
Pulpit minister for the church, Lou Butterfield said, “It was an opportunity to be of service to a lot of people and to show them the church is not something confined to a building.”Servant leader for the Source Ministry, Jimmy Gibbs said, “It’s just great to be able to help those who are less fortunate, the elderly, or those who are simply unable to get things done around the house by themselves.”
The volunteers logged hundreds of man-hours as they served numerous families around the community. Perhaps the day was summed up best by one of the Elders of the Remmel church, David Bowman. “Today was a great success in showing that Christians do more than just talk. They try their best to follow the example of Jesus in serving others. In doing so today we had the opportunity to help a lot of people and show them the love of Jesus.”
One of the volunteers, Jean Gibbs who is always right in the middle of the work, said, “The day was such a success, when can we plan for another “Church Outside the Walls” Sunday?” No doubt, expressing the attitude of all who volunteered.
