A free Hunter Education course is being offered at Arkansas State University-Newport next month. The class will meet in the Center for the Arts, room 108 on Saturday, March 17 from 8am-6pm.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's "Mandatory Hunter Education” regulation went into effect July 1, 1985.  The regulation makes it unlawful for any person born after December 31, 1968 to take or attempt to take wildlife with firearms, crossbow, or conventional bow, without first having on their person proof that he/she has satisfactorily completed an approved Hunter Education Course.
Exceptions to this regulation are those hunters whose birth dates are prior to 1969, and hunters less than 16 years of age when under the direct supervision of a licensed adult at least 21 years of age.
If you were born after December 31, 1968, or if you are just a concerned sportsman or wildlife enthusiast, plan to attend this free Hunter Education course.
Course topics include firearms safety, conservation, wildlife management, sportsmanship, archery, muzzle loading, first aid and survival, and other hunting information. The purpose of the regulation and the course is to inform and educate those enjoying the great outdoors, which will lead to safer and more responsible behavior by all outdoorsmen throughout the state. The course is free of charge and is open to everyone.
To obtain more information on the course, contact Game and Fish Officer Ronnie Cossey at 870-217-2244.  For directions to the campus visit the ASUN Website at www.asun.edu or call 870-512-7898.
